It pushes a (light weight) piston forward against fairly weak spring pressure.

As the piston moves further, a small port hole (equipped with check valve) becomes exposed and the pressurized air ...

One advantage is they can be equipped with a "captive bolt" for bayonet using pressure source.

Try wire-nuts for the skirt part, There are sizes/types of pipe they fit snug.
A short bolt can be inserted through a hole (drilled or cut tip),
a few nuts threaded on front.
The bolt end can be sharpened too.
Field points for arrows should work for that too.
