I'm not exactly sure, but it may not work too well because the the magazine looks a little far away from the bolt and all the air may rush out the barrel before it pushes bolt far enough. You could probably shorten the tube holding the bolt, the bolt itself, and make the magazine closer. Overall ...

You could also have a sharpened barrel which was fixed. Then you could use something to push the cartridge's burst disk against the back part of the barrel making it rupture.

It should be able to work. The only major problem that I see is that the piston would have to fit perfectly inside the valve, and when you say a 1/2 inch ball valve that means that the inside of the valve must be smaller than that. I would recommend what JSR said and use something to get in the way ...
