When I once made my spring-loaded ball valve for my launcher I couldnt be bothered to look for a spring, a great alternative is the inside of bungee cord (elastic) - it worked great.

Im going to get an old CO2 tank for my compressor, probably take about a year to fill it. I forgot about how hot they get though.

I use my lathe to centre the taps or dies and then turn the chuck manually like what inonickname says. Remember when tapping to do one full turn then back half a turn to clear the threads - makes a better thread and makes you tools last longer, you dont get this when you let the lathe do the work

I know that brass is a very common material for burst disks - I think thats what is used with the little CO2 cartridges.
Pressure release valve is probably the safest option but I imagine them to be an expensive part if bought commercially because they are uncommon.

yep, and they are very accurate too + I dont have to worry about the back-lash in the threads which is great because I can make things so accurate.

I used compression fittings once before - much easier when you dont want to use the blow torch or have to buy a die for threading. The olive crimps onto the pipe and make it thinner at that section - if you make a muzzle loading cannon this is a good idea ...
