Because if the epoxy hardened, the ball would not go down the pipe ¹. You could let the epoxy set up inside of a scrap piece of 2-1/2" pipe, but the oval shape of it (inside the ball) could make the ball more likely to travel

I'm going with the ball valve for reasons already stated. Maybe you could rig some sort of torsion spring and latch to open the valve even faster than you could. Good luck with the build.

I can honestly say, I've never seen lacrosse balls being used in a spudgun. I've played lacrosse before and been hit by the ball. it sucks, so I can only imagine what damage it would do out of a spudgun. Good luck with your build.

Your steel wool burning will be a problem later down the line (it will eventually melt the plastic). Instead of using steel wool, use metal window screen. You should be fine with the male endcap. Just make sure all your fittings are cemented well enough and you'll be OK.
