Yes, always be sure to check the wall thickness. I made a similar mistake a while ago and had to buy a new section of pipe as nothing would fit in it.

I would definitely use a QEV. Much better performance and are not hard to find.

Also I would also recommend using metal, just to be on the safe side. 8)

I agree with JSR. I recently spent a lot of time looking for sprinkler valves. I then did a bit of research on QEV's and Piston's and realized a QEV is much easier to acquire and is much better than a sprinkler.
