joergsprave v.2 incoming.
hah, not quite (yet... he was 5 years older than I currently am before getting started!) . I have been having a little fun with powderburners lately, although it does keep one away from the workshop.

Re: "In the world of spuds today"

Not technically a spud gun but I bought myself a crossbow and it's quite fun and having never fired a "proper" one before, surprisingly accurate.

This was at 40 yards:

Re: A tale of two valves

There's no comparison the smaller cannon shoots with way more force Have you quantified that force? Are you running the same pressure in both launchers? Seems a little counter-intuitive that a valve with what I presume is faster opening time but lower flow would perform better in these circumstances.

there are plenty of carbide rifling buttons for sale on ebay around $50.
I've seen these but I was a little hesitant to purchase one, lest it's something flagged by the powers that be in the same way those wink wink nudge nudge "fuel filters" tend to be.

I would say red chef caliber is more available at my local supplier than russet.
Not a lot of Dodge Calibers left in used parking lots once the pandemic hit.

This project is not dead, but life took over and 2 years passed.
It happens to the best of us, looking forward to seeing progress :)

It is not a very neat job, but it works fast and it pays quite little, it is what it is.
Almost like a T-34 tank :)

It's good that you have this resource to better flesh out your ideas!

Re: barrel thoughts

One thing to keep in mind is that the rate of spin is going to depend on projectile velocity, so while a rifled breech might be attractive because it's more gentle on the projectile, a rifled muzzle is going to interact with it when it's at its fastest.

Re: Victorian "Air Cane" brought back to life

Thanks gents! Need to find the time to get back in the workshop, my current project is an old Remington 760 in for a full "tactical" conversion, KeyMod forearm, AR grip and stock, the works, and in exchange the owner promised a little deer hunting trip :D

I'm impressed with the piston, it certainly was not improvised with epoxy... Did you buy a lathe or is there a friendly machinist in your neighborhood?

Re: barrel thoughts

JSR links in 3,2,1... How dare you assume exactly what I was going to do ;) There are precedents for both ideas. Apart from rifled shotgun chokes, having a small rifled sectioned at the muzzle is also the principle behind the FX smooth twist barrel that by all accounts works very well: https://www....

Mrs Foo is not impressed, despite the fact that on Thursday I sold an Amiga 1200 I pulled from the tip, for twice what I just paid for scrap iron.
Honestly there's no pleasing them...

Sweet find and it looks like it's in good hands!

Re: The Offcial Machinist Thread: Revised 01/04/2014

Busy with life so not much in the way of spudding but I did indulge in a bit of lathe time for something a little more artistic for... reasons. Now that I no longer have a laboratory to appropriate concentrated acids from, I tried my hand at salt water etching and while it's not as deep as what I wa...

I believe the ideal ratio is close to 1:1 for an oxy/acetylene mix.
