Zeus: Use a LM2940CT-12. This is a LDO low drop out regulator. Much better than the 780x series you are accustomed to. With the 780x series you will probably need a heatsink as well. The timer circuit will work with 9 to 15 VDC and the solenoid driver circuit will work from 6 to 24 VDC.
