Re: Pressure Equation Confusion

Do *not* use those threaded rods. What is the inside thread diameter of 10-24? Something like 0.15? If your ultimate strength is 70kpsi then you're only looking at 2400 pounds before they(both) snap, and at 600 psi you're looking at 4200 pounds of tensile strain. Solid 1/4 inch rods should fail at ...

Re: Pressure Equation Confusion

Thanks for the replies. I think 2 by #10 threaded rod might be your weak link and the mode of failure, um, hazardous Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Do you think two 1/4" high-strength 1144 carbon steel rods would do? The yield strength 125,000 PSI. I could just thread the ends. Do you have to s...

Pressure Equation Confusion

Hey guys. I'm a bit confused on how much pressure I can safely use with the chamber I've made. I've seen some members here use the calculator at this link: http://www.engineersedge.com/pipe_bust_calc.htm . With that calculator I get a working pressure of 1300 PSI with a safety factor of 5. Not that ...

Spring Rate Equation for Regulator Spring?

Hey Guys! Does anyone know an equation to determine the spring rate for a regulator spring? It would be for an inline regulator along the lines of Ragnarok's design, pictured at end of post. From reading old posts on SpudFiles, I have a general idea of how to do it (I think). Would the equation be s...

I think I know what you're talking about now. The screw head secures from side to side, that's why we needed to know the shear strength of the screw. Now I really feel dense. Zoro Tools has a hundred priced at $10.63. A $40.00 difference. The description looks almost identical to the ones at Grainge...

Thanks for all the useful info, Gippeto, especially how to calculate force, bearing area and shear failure. There is still one thing I'm a bit hazy on. You say you can slightly recess the screws in the plug but don't you screw through the tubing first then into the plug? So the head of the screw wil...

Smallish point...welding will destroy the heat treat (T6) and alter the pressure handling capability significantly. Would suggest an oring sealed plug with good grade socket head cap screw in shear...preferably with the head of the screw bearing on the tube wall...this increases the bearing area an...

Question on Pressure Rated Aluminum Tubing

Hey guys, The aluminum tubing is 6061-T6 Drawn (not Extruded), 2 inch OD, .065 Wall, ASTM B210. It's rated at Max 610 PSI @ 72 degrees F on McMasters web site. Link: http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-metal-tubing/=o8ypk2 Considering the launchers that are made with this will be sold to the public, w...
