Re: Corn Cannon
I really have to advise against using plastic as any chamber material. This is because plastic has a structural half-life of about 3 hours when kids are anywhere near it. And I'm assuming most of us would feel bad if it blew up in billy's face. most of us. Also you might consider slapping some fiber...

Re: Maximum safe pressure limit of Schrader/tire valve?
I've used them at ~1000psi regularly. I would not consider it safe, though catastrophic failure is unlikely. Just don't put your hand right next to it when pressurized. This also requires that you keep the internal seals very clean, as any dirt or grime will damage the gasket if it gets squeezed aga...

Re: wood drying kiln
Fnord, didn't you say a computer fan woulda been (pretty much) necessary? Can I use a spudding analogy? The fan is like a combustion chamber fan used to create turbulence and internal circulation. You do *not* want it exhausting air from the chamber constantly. Maybe if you're using completely soak...

Re: wood drying kiln
You don't want the fan forcing air in or out of the kiln. Just let it circulate internally.
You'll most likely need insulation as the barrel will radiate heat quite well. Even some towels will work (they're useful for everything, huh?).

^I'd recommend doing most of your leveling with a high-powered pellet gun instead. With .22s being so hard to find these days, it's taking me *forever* to develop .50 bmg resistance.

Re: "In the world of spuds today"
Love the hinged barrel! Is there some kind of seal involved or let the gasses escape where they may? Late, but yes, there's an o-ring around the port. It leaks but it's almost unnoticeable. My neighbor fired this thing at full power in the garage the other day. I like the quote he gave- "When I sho...

Re: Caselman air machinegun
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2014/05/02/32-cal-caselman-air-powered-machine-gun/ Nice build featured on TFB, picture heavy! I like how 90% of that guy's equipment is from harbor freight. That must have been a frustrating build, and definitely gives credit to his ability as a machinist. I pret...

Re: wood drying kiln
Yeah, seal the ends of it up and it should stop the crack from spreading. Worst case scenario, if it does, just split it open and glue it back together. You'll need to have some way for the moist air to get out of the barrel. A couple 1" holes will probably work. A fan may seem kind of superfluous, ...

Re: wood drying kiln
I'm assuming you want the wood to remain more or less intact and free of defects? If this is 'green' wood, it'll be losing so much moister over the first few days that you'll probably be better off putting it in a hot car. After that you'll want a low heat over a long period of time. You can dry the...

Re: chamber to volume ratio
Another thing which may be a factor that ggdt doesn't(?) account for, with such a thin chamber you're going to have a large amount of friction between the gasses and the chamber walls. In most guns this can be ignored but in your case it may have a noticeable impact of performance. We plan to attach...

Re: Pressure Equation Confusion
How did you calculate how many pounds would be needed to break the rod? It would be nice to have that equation for future use. Tensile, or ultimate strength, is how much force one can stretch a material with before it breaks. If you have a 1 square inch section of 70kpsi material, it should break a...

Re: Pressure Equation Confusion
Do *not* use those threaded rods. What is the inside thread diameter of 10-24? Something like 0.15? If your ultimate strength is 70kpsi then you're only looking at 2400 pounds before they(both) snap, and at 600 psi you're looking at 4200 pounds of tensile strain. Solid 1/4 inch rods should fail at 6...

Re: "In the world of spuds today"
Details man, details! What on earth is this wonderful contraption? Is that real CF furniture? Ha, didn't want to spill too much before I got to post it for real. I wanted to upgrade my old hybrid, but after everything was accounted for it ended up being a completely new gun. The pressure gauge is t...
