A wood lathe has no carriage. You rest tools on a rest and hold them with your hands. A metal lathe has the bits clamped, they also turn at much slower rates.

I think it may be a little optimistic to think a metal lathe costs $25.

In order to help you out we need to have more information. Do you want a metal lathe or a wood lathe. What do you plan to do with it? A sherline is good for small metal stuff but if you want to do large things check craigslist for used lathes or look into 9x20 or 10x22 imports.

I would advise against buying one of those $10 12 volt compressors. They wont have the flow you need and will die after only a few uses.

ITWOST: I bent my APFSDS round today. I guess I have even more reason to go for a distance shot because it is useless for armor piercing now.

In order for that to work you will must likely have to make/install a much better seal and locking mechanism or it will likely blow itself to bits. This could cause problems with getting the faces to mate correctly. It would be pretty cool if you get it to work though.

They do not need a spike to rupture but, in order to give a estimate we need to know the diameter.

The center of gravity is exactly 6" from the tip. I made some holes in 1/8" plate steel but the fins never actually get through. It will bury itself approximately 5.5" into solid wood and is quite annoying to get out.
