The steel has a peice of flint in contact with it at all times by a spring. When the wheel is spun rapidly, hot pieces of flint and steel will shoot off, causing a shower of sparks. The cheap price has a light catch however, they are a less reliable and more sensitive ignition system. The problem with lantern sparkers is that they have the tendency to not spark when wet with ANYTHING! Axe, hairspray, and starting fluid will all stop a lantern sparker from working if they should get on the flint/steel sparking assembly. They are very cheap however, and the flints are replaceable.
