Golf balls are commonly used as ammo in spudguns for a few reasons

*Uniform in shape and size
*Aerodynamic

Golf balls fit in 1.5" SDR 21 (id 1.7") PVC pipe, but because of its thin walls, it may be sleeved inside 2" SCH 80 PVC pipe.

Another barrel is Sch 10 1.5" (id 1.682") metal pipe.

As golf balls are spherical, the construction of a hop-up device is common. These consist of a high-friction object on the top of the barrel which catches and puts a back spin on the ball. This backspin generates lift via the magnus effect, <i>greatly</i> extending the range of a golf ball. Also, it improves accuracy, because instead of a spin in a random direction pushing the golf ball off course, you have a consistent back spin.

Modifications
<b>Mantle removal:</b> By removing the outer covering (mantle) of the golf ball, you reduce the diameter which allows you to put it in 1.5" sch 40 pipe. This is best done with a chisel or such tool. However, this removes the dimples; they increase the magnus effect (responsible for lift) and decrease the drag. This means that the ball won't go as far.

<b>"fin" insertion:</b> By drilling a hole and inserting a nail/golf tee/stick, you prevent the golf ball from spinning. This improves accuracy by protecting the golf ball from the magnus effect.

The barrel is the pipe used to launch the projectile, and is, along with the chamber, the only component found in all launchers. The diameter determines what projectiles will fit in the launcher, and the length affects how much energy is transferred to the projectile.

Modifications and improvements to the basic barrel include sleeving, rifling, hop-ups and flatline barrels.

There are many diameters of barrels popular in spudding, below are some that fit certain ammo:

* 4.5mm brakeline - fits bbs, good for BBMGs
* 6mm brakeline - fits airsoft bbs, a commonly used ammo in BBMGs.
* 3/4" CPVC, 3/4" sch 80 PVC (looser fit), or 3/4" SCH 120 PVC - fits .68" paintballs
* 1/2" SCH 40 PVC (.602" id) - fits "AA" batteries, marbles.
* 1/2" SDR 21 PVC (.685" id) - fits .68 caliber paintballs.
* 3/4" SCH 40 PVC (.804" id) - fits 12g CO2 cartridges, C batteries.
* 1" SCH 40 PVC (1.029" id) - size "C" batteries, smaller sized bouncy balls.
* 1.25" SCH 40 PVC (1.360" id) - fits size "D" batteries, film canisters
* 1.5" SCH 10 Metal (1.682" id) - fits golf balls, but with tighter tolerances than the 1.5" SDR barrels.
* 1.5" SCH 40 PVC (1.590" id) - a common size, good trade-off between power and potato usage. Available rifled from the SGTC
* 1.5" SDR 21 PVC (1.700" id) - fits golf balls. Traditionally sleeved within SCH-80 PVC.
* 1.5" SDR 26 PVC (1.734" id)- fits golf balls, but it is thinner than SDR 21, so the golf balls fit a little looser. Traditionally sleeved within 2" SCH-80 PVC.
* 2" SCH 40 PVC (2.047" id) - fits caulk tubes and (large) potatoes.
* 2" SCH 80 PVC (1.913" id) - fits 1.5" nominal pipe well, making it ideal for sleeving Also used as a golf ball barrel by itself, with the golf ball held in place by a rag patch, or other wadding. Also fits normal light bulbs! (Details).
* 2.5" SDR 26 PVC (2.635" id) - fits beverage cans extremely well
* 2.5" SCH 40 PVC (2.445" id) - fits tennis balls well.
* 3" SCH 80 PVC (2.864" id) - fits many drink bottles well.
* 3" SCH 40 PVC (3.042" id) - fits normal cans, empty propane torch tanks, certain wine bottles, and Gatorade bottles.
* 4" SCH 80 steel (3.826" id) - fits softballs PERFECTLY. Kind of heavy though, at over 15 pounds/foot.
* 4" SCH 40 PVC (3.998" id) - fits 29 oz. cans

26 June 2008

"A basic combustion cannon is the simplest one to build"

Now that is a bold statement. Combustion and pneumatic launchers in there simplest form are comparably easy to make. So is this statement even necessary? If the statement is necessary at least include the premises upon which you made that conclusion. Perhaps it has fewer critical components, or it is cheaper, or whatever. Alone it is extremely opinionated.

"Krylon Fusion, a type of paint specifically made for plastics, is the most common type of spray paint used on potato cannons."

While I don't think we need to go about and cite our sources, but I want to know how it is verifiable to say Krylon Fusion is the staple paint brand when it comes to painting potato cannons. Maybe mention that the Krylon is a major manufacture of paint, and that there Fusion line is specifically made for PVC among other plastics.

"When using a normal fuel, pressure rated pipe and fittings and have properly solvent welded all of the joints, you can be considered 100% safe."

Who the f*ck said that?

Why don't I just go in and edit everything myself? I intend to, but first I must understand what we are going for here. Seems a lot of people are wingin' it with some opinionated bull.

Unknown Date

Hey, where's that trouble shooting guide?

9 March 2008

I've removed Bigbob's edit:
"bigbob edit, above it says they are the simplest to build this is not true. Pnuematics are much easier to build and oprerate."

Since the preceeding sentence, and the page itself, is concerned with combustion guns the reference to pneumatics is not relevant. A basic combustion is indeed the simplest combustion gun to build.

A paragraph saying that a pneumatic may be a easier to build than a combustion may be appropriate, but that I believe the statment is debatable.

This website is here to teach you about potato guns, also called spudguns, spudzookas, and spud chuckers. So far there are pneumatic, combustion, hybrid, and BB type cannons/launchers. Here you will learn all about spud safety, how to make things like breech loaders and what types of fuel to use in your spud gun (like propane, butane, hairspray, rightguard, etc.). You will learn the good and bad types of ammo to use as well as learn the best types of ignition (like stunguns, flint ignitors, BBQ ignitors, etc.) and how legal your cannon is. You just may learn how to get something totally free. You will learn about ABS and PVC pipe and how to correctly mount a pressure gauge into your cannon. You will learn all about the different kinds of valves and how to use them. (sprinkler valves, diaphragm valves, pistons, etc.) You will learn how to make a hybrid and a pneumatic/combustion cannon. You can even learn about strafers and submachine BB guns! Above all you will be able to find instructions on how to build things that you will love for years to come. All of this is totally free so be happy and get on to registering and posting!

The Mauler valve, is a consumer available barrel sealing valve for the use in pneumatic launchers. This valve has been designed by Sean Gort, and is offered for sale at Launch Potatoes.

A single, independent testing found that the Mauler valve yields superior muzzle velocity, to that of the Supah-Valve. (The Supah-Valve having a reputation of being built professionally, and also yielding results of such a degree.) The tests were conducted by John Shell, who also manages a purely informatory site, NeoSpud. A shooting chronograph was used to return muzzle velocity data.

The Mauler valve is unique in that it utilizes modified PVC pipe, and fittings. In contrast the Supah-Valve has machined PVC bar stock for the internal components. Both valves use a lathe to modify the components found in the valve. The Mauler using a wood lathe, and the Supah-Valve using a metal lathe. The difference between the wood, and metal lathe is how the tooling is controlled. On a metal lathe, the tooling is fixed in a mechanism, then moved along linear axises. With a wood lathe the tooling is held in the operators hands, steadied by a tool rest.

It is disputed that the name is not that of the creator, Sean Gort. As formally a hand held hybrid launcher was also named the Mauler.

The chamber or reservoir is the power source of a spudgun. It is, along with the barrel, the only component found in all launchers.

In combustion cannons, the chamber contains the flammable fuel/air mixture, often butane or propane from an aerosol can of deodorant or from direct injection of the gas from a cylinder. If injected from a propane cylinder it is usually connected to a meter with regulates exactly 4.02% fuel into the chamber (the perfect amount).

In a pneumatic cannon the chamber contains compressed gas, usually air or CO2, however if the sound barrier wishes to be reached then a lighter gas must be chosen, often helium or hydrogen (hydrogen is not advisable as it is extremely flammable). The chamber is connected to the barrel either directly or through a valve, to propel the projectile when the energy is released.

The chamber is often the part of the launcher that is subjected to the highest stress, and it's important that it is well constructed and offers a high enough pressure rating. It is also the part where the most accessories are connected, especially combustion launchers; they can have a multiple holes to accommodate spark gaps, chamber fans, fuel meters and for venting.

Used for connecting two pipes of different sizes. This is different then a reducer in the respects that a reducer connects two male peices, meanwhile a bushing connects both a female and male pipe. The larger side is for inserting into female connections and the smaller side connects to male connections.

Often used to connected the barrel to the chamber and doesnt angle on the outside rather the inside. Most commonly the bushing is inserted into a coupling, but will connect to any female connection that is both the same size and connection type (Slip or Thread).
