Re: GGDT and HGDT

Sorry for the late reply on this. I saw the links had been posted, so I did not want to take any further action until SpudFiles had been upgraded. I would really like to add a new page dedicated to GGDT and HGDT. The page will go in the main menu bar on the top/left of the revised SpudFiles look. Th...

Re: I see we have a new skin …

Overall it looks good, nice to see that everything now loads properly over TLS, and the new skin is far more aesthetically pleasing than the ~2013 iteration, which made the site look like a shitty nerf gun forum from 2003. This may sound harsh, but with that abomination in the scrapheap where it be...

Re: "In the world of spuds today"

Thanks Al! Nice acquisitions, and quite a big step up from the Sherline. It is! At first I was just going to move the Sherline from work to home. I realized however that even though I now have access to the great outdoors, I still hadn't moved away from the "pen gun mentality" so to speak and the Sh...

compact precision launcher

Velocity test on a can of water:

Almost finished...

It has a 1/2" qev, 0.875" barrel. My first breechloader I think. Barrel short enough to muzzleload an arrow.

Going for a California-legal look.

Re: Describe the ultimate potato cannon

A spud cannon that pays it's own way! Once that happens I prefer a pneumatic barrel sealing piston valve 2" or smaller with built in air compressor. As for the rest of the build 2:1 rule of thumb works well. Add on's would be but not limited to built in magazine for easy loading and less of it. Int...

Re: Describe the ultimate potato cannon

I confess that I've not really thought about the details of the valving since I doubt I'd get the funding to build such, burst disks work well, and burst disks are a negligible cost in the Big Picture. The point being that whimsy aside, the gun would almost certainly use burst disks. With the valve ...

Re: Describe the ultimate potato cannon

A fully automatic 40 x 400mm cannon based on the 40mm Bofors with pre-charged x10 hybrid shells. Tho that would never generate enough gasses to cycle any kind of gas operated action, and you would most likely want that thing to have a locking bolt. Thus either an entire pneumatic standalone piston/c...

Re: Describe the ultimate potato cannon

I swear to all things holy and not, if I had the money lying around, I'd build it. I would actually be crazy enough to go through with building this thing. It would be absolutely hilarious. Let's just say that I didn't come up with the performance specs on a whim. I was asked by some folks if it wa...

Re: Ideas for biodegradable cannon-balls

I got no problem s##ting right into the barrel myself. Hey JSR, can I borrow your chrony to see how fast it goes? I will quote the late Senator Robert A. Taft, commenting on the return of Lend-Lease materials supplied to America's allies during the Second World War: "Lending war equipment is a good...

Re: Single pumping hybrid, "Strong Boy"

I am building this charger to provide future "Strong Boy´s" mono pumping, with a very simple system of loading 1/4 "bb's. :D The idea is not to complicate the weapon, I want it very simple, but avoid loading the ammunition through the firing cannon with the drumstick. It is what does not conform me ...

Re: Single pumping hybrid, "Strong Boy"

Successful test run! :D The simple charger works perfectly, makes a metallic sound barely perceptible and most importantly, does not fail. I have charged about 200 bb´s and the small battery seems to still have a lot of charge. The idea is that in the real weapon, the tube that houses the bb's, is b...

Re: JSR's workshop chronicles

At last, it's alive! https://i.imgur.com/SmWzrj1.gifv Did some running in on the lathe, everything seems to be working nicely :D The only thing I'm not happy about is the compound slide. Even with the gib screws loosened it seems to "stick" at some points, the handwheel movement isn't smooth at all....

Re: "In the world of spuds today"

ITWOST (and I realize nobody asked) The last holdout from my pre-Marines-days got decommissioned today because I haven't bothered to replace the mixture fan in it since 2014~ish, and I needed the 3" (pressure rated) pipe for another project (managing so far to build everything with stuff I had alre...

Re: "Offtopic-posts-topic" NSFW

Its been a good ten years since I've actually been active here, and it's good to see some of the old folk still around. I'm happy to see that things are running smoothly thanks to PCGUY's continued oversight! Ashamed to say that I haven't had much time to get out and build much lately, the last coup...

Modern cellphone cameras and recording ballistic tests

Technology has come some way since the "lazor" era of my Nokia Prism over a decade ago. I had a play with the Slow Motion and Super Slow-Mo modes on my Galaxy S9: https://youtu.be/Z_6Tnh5XUq8 The projectile was a 0.25g airsoft BB at high subsonic velocity. The Super Slow-Mo is particularly interesti...
