Where can I get 1\4" neoprene. I need a piece to cut a 3 1\2" washer out of for a piston barrel seal.

at most hardware stores they sell orange gasket material. its not neoprene but it works

I've had trouble finding neoprene too. Half the guys at Menards and Home Depot think I'm another stupid kid trying to pronounce the name of some paint thinner brand... :roll: Anyway, I've just been using rubber washers so far to seal pistons, but they only go up to about 1.5" diameter. They're in the aisls with the bins of screws and nuts.

Mousepads are too porous and wouldn't hold back the air, it would leak through and get into the barrel.

my mousepad has a cloth layer on the top, and a smooth, slick back. It's one of those with a wrist support though.
I'm weird, I know it, you don't need to tell me.

I took the rubber of a cheap holographic mousepad, and when I tried breathing through it, air leaked through. Maybe it was just a bad pad, but it wouldn't work as neoprene. :cry:

Most mouse pads are made of neoprene. They usually have either a fabric or hard plastic cover on one side. Both types of covers are probably unsuitable for a sealing face.

Whether a mouse pad will work depends on what type of seal is being made. As a diaphragm you would probably need closed cell neoprene which I believe is less common and more expensive. (McMaster sells all kinds of neoprene.)

For a gasket, such as for the face of a barrel sealing piston valve, I would think<sup>*</sup> that any kind of thick (~1/4") neoprene would work. When it is compressed between the barrel and piston it will collapse and seal. So, the question is does it leak when smashed between two surfaces?

<sup>*</sup> That and $5 will get you a cup of coffee at StarDucks. Surely somebody had tried mouse pad neoprene as the sealing face in a barrel sealer.
