That's not a "legitimate" idea... It's how rifling is done in firearms. Or close enough, anyways (ie, it's how it was done in the old days.).

He was pointing out how you said it.

You said it was an idea (that could possibly work), while he pointed out it's a method in common use.

That's like saying it's a legitimate idea to drink a glass of water.
