my friend had a small pneumatic gun nothing fancy but he shot pencil erasers you know not the ones on the pencil but the one you put on it but it did some damage to a soda can :D

I put a handful of pistol-size paintballs into my marble gun, get a nice scatter shot splatter on the fence.

I would go with mini-marshmallows. And make sure the "device" has less muzzle energy than a person's arm. Say muzzle velocities of less than 100 feet/sec.
