I've built two cannons out of iron pipe, they are amazing. The pipe isn't terribly expensive, for 1'' diameter pipe it is less than 10 dollars for a four foot length and around $1.50 for each connector. Obviously the connectors have different prices, but you should probably expect to pay around $1.50, just to be on the safe side.

The price of iron pipe fittings really is not that different than PVC pipe (at least the common type of iron pipe found at home depot).

It's fairly cheap, but obviously not as cheap as PVC. What are your building?

i actually wanted to use it to build a frame for a mini bike, just contemplating my options and weighing the cost.

Iron is pretty cheap, but also very heavy, so it's probably not the best metal to use as a frame. You can get steel tubing very cheaply at metal scrap yards too.
