I think I know how to build one, I'll draw my idea and post it for ya. Do you want them to shoot up or out everywhere?

mr. plow built a few of them, but he made them entirely out of sch80 pipe and fittings and he has only tested them by actuating them from 12 feet away using a 2x4 to set it off

I think I've got it. You load a bunch of paintballs into the multiple "barrels". Fill the bottom with compressed air. When the middle string is pulled by trip-wire, or pushed down by a pin, the holes in the plate line up with the holes in the chamber. The air pushes the PB's up into the air. This could be modified if it works to be angled in almost any direction.

I think a simple electricaly actuated pneumatic or combustion launcher, launching bulk liquid paint, would be the best system. Wouldn't be using paintballs that require velocity to break and doesn't require the design of a new valve.

I was gonna ask whether he wanted liquid or ball paint but thought this would be cooler and you could use paintballs you have on hand. This would be hard to reach decent speeds. Just make a piston co-axial pneumatic with a tripwire. The pin could be the thing to move the piston. Put a wad in and then pour in some paint.

i have made one that uses a 12gram co2 it was a end cap with a female clean out with four spray holes and one large hole that the co2 stuck out of. it and suposudly(sp) is would hit a screw and relese the co2 and spray paint threw the holes. but when i tested it and the co2 flew up about 20 feet in the air and nearly took out my head so i out ruled that disigna
