Yeah i've seen it done with pliers too mate but you have to addmit its not the safest way to pull apart a bullet. any number of things could go wrong and you could end up with a few less fingers.
Thats why i use my bullet hammer to get em apart. as well as safty thers no damage to the projectile nor the casing.

i saw on mythbusters that jamie pulled the slug out of a 22 bullet with pliers obviosly it didnt blow up. i once took apart a 20 gauge shotgun shell, it was pretty easy.

use common sense, as long as you dont start smacking it with a hammer you should be fine.
