Thing is, what is a "normal" car?
I mean, this was pretty normal 100 years ago:
An efficient car is going to have to be aerodynamic, and unfortunately that means long, narrow and streamlined with no protrusions if you're going for the ultimate.
If current car shapes are what people are willing to accept, then the only avenues for bettering efficiency are less thirsty engines and lighter materials, meaning only small percentage improvements.
