Just adding my 2 cents:
On the other hand, even though I believe the bible storyline is generally bollocks, I still think the history of religion should be taught, because it is an intrinsic part of culture.
To be honest it was the study of art and theatre which turned me away from religion, the two disciplines are intimately linked with the development of supernatural belief, and the realisation that everything I had held to be fundamental was in fact developed at some point in human history.
Agreed, those who claim the bible is an absolute source of moral good have obviously never read it in much detail.Fnord wrote:Claiming the bible's teachings as a defence would potentially justify you in killing a bunch of kids with wild bears because they made fun of your bald head.So yeah, it may be a bit dated in some areas.

I'm Catholic (for the moment), and unlike many of my fellow Christians, I've actually read a good portion of the Bible, and thus I fully agree with you. I actually keep verse references in my phone so I can pull them out right away when somebody makes a silly claimjackssmirkingrevenge wrote:Agreed, those who claim the bible is an absolute source of moral good have obviously never read it in much detail.

It always amused me that my parents were very strict about not allowing me access to violent and sexual media, but were perfectly happy to let me read the bible, which I did with gusto. And not the "child friendly" version either, the proper text in all its gory detail.saefroch wrote:I've actually read a good portion of the Bible, and thus I fully agree with you.

Once every 5 years we celebrate the 1945 liberation and that's about it.Do the Dutch celebrate their independence from anything?
It used to be annual..but some ( use any fallus replacement here) cut costs by scrapping it...
We got a " Queens Day" though.

There is plenty of violence in the bible, deception, corruption, murder, adultery, slavery, etc. Killing every man woman and child in a town happened. But as mentioned, this is not the place..
My only point was in the USA, I'll defend your right to say you believe there is no god. I only ask you respect my right to say I believe in God.
This was NOT included in the Declaration or original Constitution. This right was included in the bill of rights which was ratified at a later date.

I don't seem to recall anyone disagreeing with this...Technician1002 wrote:My only point was in the USA, I'll defend your right to say you believe there is no god. I only ask you respect my right to say I believe in God.
A lot was missing from the original constitution... but it's still a massive document. I've read it.Technician1002 wrote: This was NOT included in the Declaration or original Constitution. This right was included in the bill of rights which was ratified at a later date.
