A 5th grader made his own aerogels. I realize aerogels aren't much use to us, as we need strength more that light weight, but it is still very cool, and just goes to show that with a little dedication you can do what ever the hell you want.

I don't know about useless to us - some aerogels are extremely good insulators, the best ever created. That could come in quite useful in a combustion cannon, especially something like a coaxial where surface area is even higher in the chamber.

Used in big money-making computer harddrives as insulators.

Lightest material on earth
I'd have to disagree, and say that gaseous hydrogen is the least dense material on Earth.

Aerogel has to be one of the coolest materials on earh.. I ordered a sample piece about 3"x3"x1/2" and i put it to an insane test. I put the piece on a ring stand and held a lit mapp gas torch under it and put my other hand on top. It felt barely warm to the touch. Amazing stuff.
P.S. It's the lightest
solid on earth
