TURKEYS!!! HEHEHEHE....

Hey fellow spudders! This morning I went turkey hunting and come around 7:45, I see a tom, 3 jakes, and six hens coming out of the woods across the field i was hunting on. As they gradually worked there way towards me (after 20 minutes) another pack came out of the woods. This one had 4 toms, 1 jake, and no hens. They quickly huddled by the hens and became one big flock. about 5 minutes later, 2 jakes finally got within shooting range (approx. 40-50 yards). One of the jakes saw something he didn't like and casually turned around and began wondering in the opposite direction. The rest of the pack was also, so I had my eye on the last jake that was still within considerable shooting distance (now 50-55 yards). It turned around and started walking in the opposite direction like the others, so i decided now or never. raised my gun, and BOOM!

Bagged it!
I was using a 20-gauge Remington 280 express magnum shotgun with a turkey choke tube, specially made for heavy shot (which i was using, hehehe...).
So i could have (with my choke tube and heavy shot shells) shot accurately at a range of 60-65 yards... If i would have known that, I could have gotten one of the Toms in the back. those boys were BIG. And were fanning too so they looked about 25-28 lbs.

18 lbs

I used to hunt with my Springfield '03A3, but for my intents and purposes the .270 Winchester is better than using a .30-06. Then again, I was hunting deer, not turkeys. I'd hate to see what a .30-06 would do to a turkey.

omg, there would be no turkey left using a 30-06. It would obliterate the poor thing. Though they are rats with wings...they eat all of your winter wheat, bastards!

"The Great Elusive Gobbler" turkeys just happen to be the most frustrating animal alive to hunt. Constant vigilance, paitience, and failure are all parts that I have had to come to terms with. Turkeys have made me a better hunter, although I haven't killed one yet. Good to hear others are using Remington shot guns. I use a 20ga 870 express and I would never use another shotgun in the woods.

Anyway, mountain goats are a tad larger than a turkey.

actually, i also have an 870, i prefer that gun, but wanted to see how this one shot. between you and me, I'm going back to the 870.

and yes, its taken me 3 years before i even got a shot at a turkey and whaddiea know, first shot is first kill shot lol. I'ts youth hunt now and im 15, so this year is my last year for the spring turkey youth hunt, but oh well...at least i made the most of it. Nice to know there are other hunters out there. Actually, I've shot big birds with a 30-06 before and it just makes a .30 cal hole all the way through them...the bullet barely knows it went through anything...damage, while instantly lethal is pretty minimal.

really? hmmm... i guess i expected a bigger exit wound but maybe i was just thinking that because of the pancake pattern when shooting steel targets 8)
