Maybe if you guys cooperate with me and my lathe, I can use it to build a hybrid!! Ever think about that? :P

I admire your spirit but I think you have to look at the bigger picture.

You will spend a lot of time and effort on something that at best will probably be as good as a cheap woodworking lathe.

From this article:
Building a lathe from scratch is a complex and sometimes frustrating task. In hindsight, I believe that a good second hand propriety built machine can prove more satisfactory.
I would suggest again that you investigate the possibility of buying a good secondhand machine.
When you make a launcher, you don't synthesize your own polyvinyl chloride and extrude your own pipes, there's no shame in purchasing the basics.

At least he's consistent: builds pneubmatics and lathes made of wood...
He can't handle the real deal: hybrids and metal lathes :D

I was reading some of your earliest posts on the forum, Gun Freak. You showed so much promise with hybrids, stating several times you would want to build one in the near future

This might be a better alternative to a homemade, wooden lathe. No power source required, infinite speed control and probably just as accurate

Some of you amaze me with your "can't do" attitudes.

Ever seen a jgrow cnc router? Made from mdf...and it works. Will actually cut aluminum too. Not as fast as a "proper" machine tool, surface finish isn't as good either...but does work.

Other than that very simple criteria...what's really needed to build a spuddy?

My turn to tell folks to lighten up a little eh?

Sure, horses for courses, maybe a home built wooden lathe is all GF (unfortunate acronym, that would explain the lack of interest in manly hybrids) needs - but after using a precision tool, it's hard to imagine being happy with anything else.

You could buy a wood lathe, and add a tool mount to cut metal... I wouldn't do that, but its an option. And you won't have to worry about it exploding in your face.

That is sad, what kind of dog was she?

I've got a Jack Russell Terrier that's 15 and overweight. He's had bowel disease and earlier this year he had a 1kg tumour removed from his liver (I think), yet he's still going pretty strong. They shaved a small 2" x 2" square patch on his back so they could inject him with what-ever and the patch hasn't grown any hair back. Looks really funny :D
