Australia laser laws are crazy, You can used to be able to buy lasers of deal extreme but now they have stopped shipping them too Australia, i bought a 20mw green laser off them and it is great fun, I think the rule is anything over 1mw can get confiscated by customs and because lasers are such an issue to planes they will prosecute, (I am in Victoria so i am not entirely sure about the laws in qld). I have had 2 different knives confiscated by customs and all they do is send you a letter, but if you are willing to try then ebay is probably the best place.

I got the 20 mw laser when they were illegal, they shipped it as 'light pen' it works well in the day but anything less you are going to struggle to see. The best way to get one if you are dead set on getting one, if a friend goes to china or hong kong get them to buy one / more to see to people because people always want high power lasers.

The rules are that any pointer style laser of >1mw of output power, is illegal to import without some kind of permit. Lasers of <1mw are legal, but are not allowed to be used in public (I'm fairly sure on this but havn't read up on the laws recently).

I believe that unhoused laser diodes and optics are still unrestricted, so you could always construct your own housing. Whatever you do, be extremely careful with anything over ~5mw of output or so... lasers above this level arn't novelties, and can be quite dangerous to your vision.
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

well just to give my input on how full of crap the people can be about lasers...

7-8 months ago we where having a LAN at my home and usually when we take a break we BBQ some meat this just happened to be at 12 am so my one friend pulled out his 125mw green laser and started to fool around with it it just so happens that as he started to play around with it showing us how far it is visible into the night sky, a chopper flew over... after we finished our BBQ (we call it a braai over here but anyway...) we went inside to eat. Just as we were about to start playing again the doorbell rang... so I asked what this could possibly be about and he told me he wanted to speak to the owner of the green laser. I told him that it didn't concern me and walked off, so after they took that friend of mine to the police station he came back to collect his stuff he left at my home earlier when I asked he said he had to be in court the following week...
lucky for him, his birthday was the week after the incident because he was still technically a minor at the date of the incident, but had this happen a week later he would have either been in jail or had to pay a R5000 fine
The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas!

If you want to build lasers this is where you go.

100mW in blue ray can be done for $30, it'll be far better quality than what you'd buy.

Talk to TTerbo, he's in NSW and will set you up, and that spelling is right.

I bought, http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.469 which is good fun but it says
- Attention Australian Customers: due to new regulations enforced by the Australian Customs, orders of >1mW lasers units shipped to the Australia are no longer accepted. Orders that were previously accepted and unshipped will be cancelled and refunded to customers. This affects Australian orders only.

If you really want a laser i suggest following this instructable
http://www.instructables.com/id/Laser-Flashlight-Hack!!/
I bought all the parts and they got through fine, the only piece I didn't do the same was buying a 300mw diode which i found out after i received it is infrared, shame to dangerous but if you find a diode that is blue or green or what ever then go for it

Good to see you repping the site man.. I was over there for a while when I was into building lasers a few months back..
Tell me where you get these blue diodes for so cheap?

On the topic, it's super easy to whip up a simple and powerful laser if you have a few soldering skills.. Do a search on a ddl driver. Couple that with a red diode from a DVD burner and you'll have plenty of power for this application.. I had mine running at close on 400mA(way too high for those diodes) for about 2 months before it quit..burning power, and very visible in daylight..
Now you brought it up, I may have to make one for my gun :D
