It's a $29 Optus plan, not the Galaxy S II. My current android phone is akin to a pentium II running windows 7, damn slow.

If you feel like doing a bit of work for your phone... the iphone 4 is pretty good.

However, in order to make the phone worth while... you will need to jailbreak it. once jailbroken, you can do so much more with it... such as use it as a wifi broadcaster, and get online with your laptop... using your iphones 3g connection... all with no wires.

My iphone 4, gets about 20 hours of "phone time" out of each battery charge... before i jailbroke it.... i was limited to about 10hours.

Also, jailbroken iphones are capable of a complete OS swap. There is even a froyel (sp?) aindroid OS, for the iphone 4.

If you dont want to jailbreak the phone (quite the process.) than i would stay away from all iPhones... as the software seriously limits the phone.

Galaxy S II is supposed to be available from my provider soon...might wait for it as the reviews I DID find for it rated it as one of the "best".

What's "jailbreaking" a phone? Something like "unlocking"? Any benefit to doing this to my wifes phone? (3G)

Will have to look that up. Can the Android phones be "jailbroken" too? Any known benefit?

Thanks

Edit: Interesting read. :)

Android phones are rooted, but there is not an exploit for tbe new version of android yet. Additionally, some new phones are being released with a locked bootloader, so you can't load a custom ROM (basically operating system) with root.

One phone you might look at is the Huawei sonic. It's a lower-end Android, but it runs 2.3 (The latest mobile version), has a decent sized screen which is nice and clear, supports all the standard features (multitouch, GPS, WiFi etc...), and isn't painfully slow. My sister has one (picked it up for $180 in Australia) and it pretty much dominates my Galaxy i5503T (another low-end Android) in every respect. It's still a buget phone, but it's excellent for the cost.

You might want to take a look at it if you're interested in an Android but don't want to fork over too much cash.

Also keep in mind that almost any Android phone is going to need charging every night... If you use them a lot, they chew through battery like nothing else.

I have gotten 2+ days out of my droid 3 with light use. GPS, wifi off, "max battery saver" data off, hell, I may have turned 3g off too. And I didn't play any angry birds. The extended battery is like $50, though. I don't have it, but I'm pretty sure about 200 mAH isn't worth it.

I have a Huawei currently, I personally won't recommend them (other than their 3G modems), battery life is OK, computing power is atrocious, slow as a snail on barbituates, nice pretty blue though.

Zeus, may I ask which Huawei you have? Some of their older low-end phones were extremely slow (Ie the Ideos), but I can vouch for the Sonic being quite snappy for what it is.

You can't really judge a phone's speed by its brand... My low-end Samsung Galaxy 5 pales next to my sister's newer, but still low-end Huawei Sonic. And her phone would pale in comparison to a high end phone from any manufactuer.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but there are smart phones with stereoscopic cameras that take 3D pictures and video. THAT is what you should get!

How about this?

Do not ask me why some loony is paying that much for that phone, I'm truly at a loss.
