Thanks for all the input guys.

After that and some further research, it seems that to get a decent ATV, I'll be needing to spend as much as I would on a small car at least, which has put quite a damper on proceedings. Bleh.

I've been looking through the classifieds, plenty of 150-250cc stuff in the 1000-1500 euro range, which is at the limit of what I'm willing to spend - the question is, are they good enough?

Or just get a raptor 700 and eat the 300 ex and 400 ex for dinner!!!!

400 ex's are slow!!!
700 aren't much faster, most of the bigger one are just geared down to give fuktonnes of torque. If you want speed you need one of

Can't do that without making the location of my bat cave very obvious, however here's a collage of stuff that's in my price range:

The ones I've seen like that are out of budget.

How about this $750 250cc "needs attention" 1998 Polaris? Not pretty but half the price of the others I've seen, and I'm a miserable çunt ;)

Of course I would love to get something with a one litre engine, but it comes down to price - the main reason I'm considering a quad is because I want something that's significantly cheaper to purchase, run, maintain, license and insure than a car.

Thanks jrrdw, the argument for two wheels is strong - but for that I'd need to get a motorbike license which is a pain in the arse, I can drive a quad with my regular license which is why I'm looking into them.

Wow here in Maryland that scooter or any that will go 40 mph+ can be tagged legal to run with standard drivers license but any atv...no way! The police will do their best to chase you down, give big tickets and impound your atv! No love for riding atv's on state highways here.

Strange. Motorised bicycles are not regulated, so that would be my most available equivalent, but I want something less flimsy.

I know you may look a little silly if you go down this road, but hear me out. My grandparents live right next to a golf course, so they have had a golf cart for quite a while. Last year my grandfather got all of the proper modifications to make it street legal. Then, you've got an electric car, and at least in America, you tax deduction for owning an electric vehicle
