You could all ways get a cheep kit from JCWhitney and save the factory set up and swap them out to get through emissions test, then put the duels back on.

The basic idea to improve performance is to make the engine "breath" better. Splitting the exhaust will help but don't expect a huge difference...

emissions yes we do, pa sucks, we have laws like crazy here, i want was wondering if i can just run a y pipe after my cat and be done
I live close to the MD/PA state line and have discussed the emissions laws PA drivers deal with. For your yearly inspection you need to have factory equipment on your truck, any aftermarket/altered stuff will fail the inspection. That being said you can talk to a dealer and find out if your model ever came with a factory duel exhaust.

Chances are if it did you can get a muffler shop to re-create the system for you and still get through the yearly inspections, that will be expensive. I would talk to your inspector where you take it to that way you will get to know exactly what he will pass and fail when it comes down to it. All inspectors are a bit different... It winds up coming down to interpretation of the inspection laws.

Y after the cat? Bad idea I think. It would give you extra PITA for up-keep and inspection.[/b]

Not true actually. Most manufacturers of regular passenger vehicles (in other words non-sports cars) tune the engine down to be conservative. Usually exhaust helps a lot more than you would think because the OEM exhaust is usually restrictive. The idea is to get all the exhaust out of the cylinder as efficiently as possible to boost power and it works for any engine. That's the main mod for the old Raptor go-kart engine and it boosts power a whopping 30% at the low end and up to 90% on the top end. Exhaust is always a safe bet for producing power on a stock engine even if it's a small percentage.
yes actually it is true. Were talking about a ford truck not a raptor go cart engine..
The principal is exactly the same. There is functionally almost no difference between the Raptor and a single cylinder on a Ford. Ever stuck a potato in someones exhaust pipe? It keeps the car from running. Restrictive exhaust does pretty much the same thing. My point is that a proper, well done dual exhaust will actually boost performance. To get the best boost, run eight separate straight pipes. People do it all the time for non-street high performance vehicles.

I Second the flowmaster comment made earlier. I have put those on all my trucks, they sound very nice and deep only obnoxious when you actually get on the truck and floor it. They make 3 different styles, singel chamber is the loudest, 2 chamber less louder, and 3 chamber which is the deepest. All 3 improve airflow for the truck as well.

If you do a cold air intake, don't leave it sitting on top of the engine like the ricer noobs do in their Civics. Put it as far away from the hot engine as possible. I see too many cold air intakes that are placed even closer to the engine than the original air box.

don't just put a pod filter on the end it will make is worse, you should just cut a hole in the air box and run a pipe down to a vent in the front bar or something you can also make some pressure if you get a good spot, don't go over the radiator.

Warp all the pipes in intake heat shield/aluminium tape and i even put a aluminium plate over my extractors to stop as much heat as i could. even with all that you don't feel any diffrence though unless your making 5% more power you feel it. [/code]

I want to make my truck louder,I have already had a performance muffler, ( flowmaster 10 series, ) single in dual out muffler) which roars really well and sounds awesome

I want it louder,
Now do cold air intakes make a difference in sound of the muffer? i was told they do and dont?

Do i add headers?
I was also told to hollow out the cats? but then i was told my check engine light will go on and some say it wont, i dont know what to belive
Any info will help!!!

I would dump all the mufflers and catalyzers, and just go for an empty 2"pipe :)

If you want a REALLY loud truck, I would duct tape some fireworks to it, works all the time for me. Chicks are attracted as if you were a magnet when you drive around like that!

How about an air horn? That would make it loud :D

EDIT: or use a very long organ pipe as exhaust

This is actually a very good idea, iif you put some directional control valves on it, you can send the exhaust gases to different organ pipes, getting it to play some nice tunes. instant chick magnet!

Oh very nice! And add some QEVs to get nice high-pitch sounds! You could whistle to girls miles away! Instant pussy-magnet!

With improper pilots they give very horny honks :)

For some added effect, with the organs and stuff, I would put some religious people (the pope or something) on the roof. It would be nice if they put up a nice dance performance.

If you really want to attract those hot redneck girls while cruisin' round town with your cool truck, you'll also need some disco lights on it.
