What do you think of my last project, a >2W laser lighter ?

Here is the building video:
Features:
- It should be over 2W (I don't have a laser power meter )
- M-140 diode
- 445nm
- two 300mAh LiPo batteries
- FMT V2 buck/boost driver 1.7A
- 405-G-2 Lens
- copper module
- Zippo® style
Btw, Utron Inc has patent pending for "Laser Ignition of High Pressure Combustile Gas Mixture in a Pressure" I think they use it with CLGG http://www.utroninc.com/patents.html

Fascinating... I was unable to find the actual patent application though :-/
You could use it as an ignitor for a spudgun if you use it to light a match or something else inside the spudgun
You could focus on a black spot... actually it's an experiment that could be done with your lighter, a plastic bottle and some butane, if one were so inclined...

What kind of distance can you get out of it? Say you were burning a tooth pick in half, how far away before it no longer burned the tooth pick in a 10 or 15 second test?
How long do those batteries last?
Last question, How effictive for fighting off zombies?
1. When you have a good lens that is well ajusted... over 100m (300 feets)
2. 5 minutes full power + 15 lower
3. I didn't have time to use it against zombies... I'll try later
4. Yes I saw this video (by KipKay) He's got a laser lighter too... but a 100mW plastic Bic lighter =P

Actually laser weapons were developed and tested sometime ago. They we're so effective (and cruel in a way) that they got banned before they were even used in combat
Though it's not the kind of weapon that puts holes in your body and kills you but one that blinds you (and renders you as useful or dangerous as if you were dead)
Plus it doesn't require a lot of power to blind someone - this thing right here has more than enough umph to do the job. Better yet you can use near IR lasers which are invisible to the naked eye so you can't even see one is pointed at you
This isn't anything new really I first heard about them when reading army field manuals

I think the fact that they can be defeated by appropriate eyewear has something to do with it too.

not really you can block part of wavelenght only... a filter that blocks the entire wavelenght is sheet metal
