@Talk. I was attempting to make a joke, to rationalize my inability to afford a brand-new car. :)

@Poland_spud. Were you talking to me? Politically correct? ROTFL. I'm about as far from that as you can get. I'm just telling it like I see it. Of course, that viewpoint could be skewed by three aunts and a mother who have never totaled a car between them, and two uncles who have totaled practically every car they owned.

@JSR.
I just look down on these jap imports with disdain from the window of my ram :D
Lol. Like me and my 87 Dodge RamCharger. Hit that broadside with anything short of a tank and I'll be just fine. Course, the 14 mpg highway cost isn't perfect..........

@PC_GUY. She was only doing around 20 mph? How fast were you going? That is a massive amount of damage for that kind of speed.

Really glad you're ok! Now I feel bad for stealing what should've been your thread title! :P

It always amazes me the amount of irresponsible people who are willing to put other's lives at risk by driving while drunk, underage, etc. It seems that a lot of sensible drivers get in accidents, it's not their fault, but instead it's the fault of someone who really shouldn't be allowed on the road in the first place... The worst thing is it seems like you came off worse.

I was replying to mako. Some just lack skills - the best ones are only as good as an average men, the worst men as just like average women.

Not to complain but I find those who drive slowly the most annoying. Their logic is - slower = safer and it usually does make sense. But it doesn't make sense when you're on a straight 1 lane road, the weather is great and speed limit is 90km/h but they drive 50km/h and force everyone behind them to overtake them - effectively reducing safety for everyone involved including them. In other words f### logic I am a woman :D

and if they drive in a risky manner, they don't really feel the danger and thus they continue in their ways. the feeling of danger is felt more clearly when driving in a small car, I can tell you I have been in a small car with a friend at 125 MPH (I wasn't driving) and I can tell you, you know very clearly that you are in danger. my point is that when you feel the sensation of speed and danger, it is a great motivator to drive more safely and people driving overly large vehicles don't always have that feeling of danger.
This is a commonly held belief:
Steven Landsburg, in the Armchair Economist wrote:If you find it hard to believe that people drive less carefully when their cars are safer, consider the proposition that people drive more carefully when their cars are more dangerous. This is, of course, just another way of saying the same thing, but somehow people find it easier to believe. If the seat belts were removed from your car, wouldn’t you be more cautious in driving? Carrying this observation to the extreme, Armen Alchian of the University of California at Los Angeles has suggested a way to bring about a major reduction in the accident rate: Require every car to have a spear mounted on the steering wheel, pointing directly at the driver’s heart. Alchian confidently predicts that we would see a lot less tailgating.
I can't say it applies to me though. I have driven bigger heavier vehicles for 5 years now, and I can tell you that the feeling that I am more likely to cause damage to others than myself means that I drive slower, brake earlier and scan for obstacles further than I do when I am driving a regular car.
She was only doing around 20 mph? How fast were you going? That is a massive amount of damage for that kind of speed.
Well... yes and no, remember modern cars are designed more than ever to crumple in order to protect the driver, they literally don't build 'em like they used to - so very often, damage is far out of proportion to what you would expect.

I agree that is quite annoying when people drive don't drive the speed limit, even when it is safe to do so,
on the flip side, there are those that drive way faster then they should when it is not safe, particularly wet weather, I always drive with some added caution when it is raining, but then there are those that speeds past me probably between 80km/h and a 100km/h and that is is when the road is totally drenched, I guess nobody ever told them what hydroplaning is...

as to the woman drivers / male drivers thing I can say I know some pretty bad female drivers, but I know some bad male drivers as well and I try to avoid being near those people because they think they are good drivers and meanwhile they are just reckless drivers that drives very irresponsibly and it seems more dangerous for me then just a bad driving female (and I am not commenting on witch gender is the better driver on average cause truth told all men probably thinks men are better drivers and all females probably thinks that they are better as well, so that is my view on that subject)
The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas!

@ Labtecpower. Yep. The bigger the better. Reminds me of a story my mom likes to tell.

One time, some idiot kid, who did not have a drivers licence, slammed into our 2002 Chevy Van while mom was backing it out in the parking lot. The dork was SPEEDING in the parking lot. Anyway, the van is the 15 passenger size, and it had the trailer hitch on it at the time. He hit her from behind and it nearly totaled his car, and didn't leave a scratch on the van.
She never went anywhere without the hitch after that........

PC_GUY, think you can mount a trailer hitch on the side of that Mazda?

@JSR. They really don't BELTUT, do they? (Build Em Like They Used To). That's why I bought an older truck. I'm pretty sure this thing saw service as an armored vehicle..........

The statistics are very clear. Insurance companies (at least in this country, at least until recently) charge female drivers lower insurance premiums (all else - the vehicle, previous record, etc - being the same)
They don't do that out of the goodness of their hearts, they do it because female drivers are statistically less dangerous.

I say "until recently", as the European Court of Justice decided that using a driver's sex to determine their risk category was in breach of equality laws and so now men and women have to be charged the same across Europe.
(I'm not sure whether I consider this reasonable or ridiculous. On the one hand, men and women are demonstrably different as drivers... on the other, if fairly evaluated on their individual records, then that's essentially accounted for anyway).

Women are certainly at a disadvantage in areas like parking, where men's better spatial awareness helps, but parking ability is not actually as indicative of driving precision and safety as some might imagine.

In any case, see this - just replace math(s) with driving:

Equality that isn't a double edged sword is not equality.

If it wasn't for the male imperative to take risks which makes them slightly more reckless drivers, there would be no cars. Or bicycles. Or the taming of horses. In fact, walking would be the only form of transport.

There's taking it too far. As extreme examples, let's say they're looking for an actor to play the next James Bond... should an actress have an equal chance at the role? Should all athletics world records be condensed to unisex ones (effectively making women's athletic performances disappear from the record books)?

I'm not sure I buy the "A man invented the car, so his entire gender gets credit and should assumed to be good drivers" argument.
