lately i've been contemplating the idea of building a small motor to run off compressed air, regulated to probably twenty psi or something like that. i'm thinking i want to use piston(s) rather than a turbine, i think it would be cooler. has anyone done something like this? any brilliant ideas about what to use for components (piston, cylinder,etc) i would like to make it double acting, giving a power stroke in both directions rather than just one. i am thinking i want it to be small, cylinders around half an inch or less. any ideas would be much appreciated

You could just grab a small two stroke engine and put your air injector in it and voila. But I believe you would get better power from two turbines, that way you can get high pressure and a low pressure turbine. All steam systems are this way for a reason. You dont see to many fire tube boilers on trains anymore.

im pretty sure 20 psi wont move a metal 2 storke engine SNM. i like jacks idea though

You would be surpised with a little engine that is properly lubericated. But yes I guess you would get the most out of a small piston. However that will be not be fun machineing.

Not my idea at all, it's how practically every CO2/Air powered motor (like the sort used in model aircraft) works.

You can find the C02 plane engines on Ebay from time to time. It's a short ride though, the C02 don't last long. What do you have in mind for it if you build it?

I don't have a specific use in mind, its more the idea that it would be really cool to make. that animation is very helpful, i may do just that. simple, effective. I'll check ebay too. I was wondering about the motor on AirHogs airplanes, i used to have one and it was awesome, but i think it broke and i didn't foresee wanting the motor. Any ideas where i could get some of those cheap?

Ebay, for the airhogs. You probly wont get the C02 motor cheep.

I don't necessarily want a CO2 motor, any compressed gas motor will do. and even if i did get a manufactured one, i think it would be sick to build my own. how much pressure do the CO2 motors run at?

Airhogs and CO2 motors work exactly the same way, only the CO2 motors run at higher pressures and are more finely engineered. They're filled directly from CO2 bulbs without being regulated so I guess they run at about 850 psi max.
