First of all let me start this out making sure everybody is cool with this.

I am NOT making a silencer for a real fire arm, it is for my paintball marker.
No body minds if I make one, if there are any laws against this here no body cares, it is strictly for recreational use, none of you will get in trouble for my actions, ect.

Ok, so I am making a silencer for my paintball marker. I have fully planned out how I am going to build this silencer.

What I need to know is how big does the silencer have to be to successfully muffle the sound of the paintball marker?

I am making this for an upcoming night game and I want to be ultra sneaky :D

I'm pretty sure that that is still illegal in the fact that you are altering the sound of your gun to make it quieter. I tried to make one for my airsoft gun and my friend asked his dad who was a cop and he said no way. Maybe its different for paintball but IDK.

Simply put, as big as you can make it.

With silencers there is no substitute for cubic capacity, hell if you make it big enough you don't even need baffles. You have to make some compromises of course, it can't be too long or it will upset the balance of the gun, nor too wide as then it won't let you aim. Make it as big as you can live with ;)

Ok, that's good news :D

For now I will do as my wallet allows me, I will update my progress as I go along. I will most likely go with 40mm, 52 would be better but that means I need to buy more pipe.

Spudthug, how well did your silencer work?

Real silencers are illegal but you can buy suppressors for airsoft guns. I have one on my tokyo marui m4.

In the US, it is illegal to make a suppressor for a firearm (paintball guns and airsofty things aren't firearms) without first acquiring the tax stamp.

Note, however, that the BATFE is prone to argue that your paintball suppressor can be used on a real firearm.

However, )Demon( is NOT in the US, so our laws don't apply.

From the Beeman website on the issue of the legality of airgun silencers in the US:
Michael A. Crooker was found guilty on Wednesday, July 15, 2006 of illegally manufacturing a silencer. He faces a mandatory sentence of 15 years.

Crooker made a silencer for a Korean Big Bore 909, a .45 caliber air rifle. In 2004 he sold the rifle and silencer to another party and he shipped it through the U.S. Postal Service, where it was intercepted.
When ATF tested the silencer on a firearm, it silenced the report. That is the legal definition of a silencer.
Making a silencer is a violation of several counts of the same law. Because a silencer is considered to be a firearm by federal law, the maker has just made a firearm without a license to manufacture - count one. Firearms that are sold are required to have serial numbers, and this one didn't - count two. And possession of an unregistered silencer is also a crime - count three.
The jury did ask for additional clarification on what constitutes a silencer, but the judge was unable to give them anything beyond the law.

Yeah, but i don't think many people have .68 calber firearms. Oh well, there's alway aircraft armament...

Is your barrel ported all down it's length? If so, you should make silencer that jackets the whole barrel. If you tell me what barrel you have I could prolly help you out with sizes.

You'll be surprised, a 20 gauge shotgun is an 0.615 caliber firearm, a 16 gauge shotgun is a 0.663 caliber firearm ;) plus of course a suppressor designer for a 0.68 caliber will still have some silencing effect if used with a 0.45 weapon. Remeber, the law doesn't ban effective silencers only, you only have to reduce the noise by a little to be considered a criminal in the eyes of the law.

No, all the porting is at the end. So I don't need to worry about that, I took that into account though. Well, it isn't really porting, the barrel ends as the porting begins.

Does it matter how far apart the disks inside are apart from each other?

At first I was going to make the disks out of flattened PVC but now I think I might just get plastic bottles and cut disks out of that. But they might be a little too fragile.

Can anyone think of a cheap alternative?

On my silencer i made baffles out of PVC sheet which i made. All i used was a dremmel and they didn't take that long to make.

My silencer didn't work that well for 2 reasons that i know of.
1. The holes in the barrel weren't big enough.
2. I didn't have enough volume

But it did change the sound tone alot, just not really the dB.

To make an effective silencer for that barrel, you will have to extend the ported area of it. You could do this with 3/4" cpvc pipe with holes drilled in it, but it would be difficult. I have an AeroTwist barrel that has spiral porting running down its length, which made it way easier to silence. You could also just by a cheap fully ported barrel of of eBay, and base the silencer off of that.
