To quote Wikispud... " When it comes to pilot valves, bigger is always better."
Ok you can say it... You should just build a piston valve!
Well to that I say HA!!! I am, but like everything else I do I don't like just copying something so mine is turning out unique. Well for now I still like sprinkler valves.
Ok to the point. This was the first cannon I built so forgive the primer stands. I never posted this Cannon because I didn't think it was really worthy, but I did want to show everyone the modification to it sprinkler valve. At first I thought I was probably being a little crazy. Until it worked that is! Man what a difference, especially with the short barrels. Well check out the photos, they pretty much speak for themselves. I don't think you could get a sprinkler valve to open any faster without pulling a vacuum on the pilot valve. Which I also plan on trying.
No my current setup is not very ergonomic, but this was only a test to see if it worked. I plan on adding three of these to my triple valve launcher. The Launcher now makes a Bang instead of pop when it is fire. In fact the valve opening is quite violent. No more traditional orbits valve honk even at low pressure. Trigger response is instantaneous. My range increased after this modification from about 100-110 yards with my 1.5" barrel to about 125-130 yards with a potato at 100 psi. My 42" 1/2 sch 40 barrel will sent a 280 grain .58 cal lead round ball through 3/4" plywood @20 yards and with my 15" long golf ball barrel I can penetrate 1/2" plywood at about 20 yards. I get pretty close to 200 yards at 100 psi with golf balls. Golf balls are definitely one of the better projectiles.
Cannon...
Valve: 1" orbit sprinkler valve
Pilot: 3/4" orbit sprinkler valve modified for pneumatic triggering.
Chamber: 12" of 2" sch40
barrels: 20" of 1.5" sch 40, 42" of 1/2 sch 40, 24" of 1" sch 40

- I inserted a three-quarter inch threaded fitting and filled as much of the pilot space with epoxy as I could. Because you have to remove the stop for the diaphragm you can adjust how much the diaphragm opens by adjusting how far you insert the three quarter inch fitting, because the three quarter inch fitting now acts as a stop.

The scariest words in the English language... I have an idea!Fnord wrote:[This gun brought to you by the Department of Redundancy department.]
Wait till you see three of these on my triple valve launcher.
This idea came to me when I changed from a single blow gun to a sprinkler valve pilot on my triple valve launcher. So I figured if a bigger pilot valve is better why not take it to the extreme.

I'm working on getting a video to upload. I haven't been able to get vids from my Nikon to upload to youtube. I don't know why. Next time I go out I'll try to make a video with my Ipad.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:Hahahaha fantastic! Some videos would be great

However, it's not been done very often!
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

Kicking it up a notch is the whole idea. Imagine three of these on top of my triple valve launcher.
When I first built my triple valve launcher I was piloting all three valves with a single blowgun. When I added the fourth sprinkler valve as a pilot there was a dramatic increase in performance. I'm going to add three of these to my triple valve launcher just out of curiosity and to have a little fun. I know there are easier and probably more efficient ways to make more power, but half the fun for me is just tinkering on stuff.
Well I came up with the idea myself, but if someone's done it before they can take all the credit. I'm not worried about it.noname wrote:Hate to break it to you, but it's been done! I tried searching for it for a good 20 minutes and came up short, but oh well.
You could always kick it up a notch and pilot the pilot with another sprinkler

I remember Luckythirteen doing it on Spudtech way back in the day; I hadn't seen D_Hall's until now!
Boomer58cal, that last picture looks good! I'm sure the fourth sprinkler really does help with piloting three others. That task would be a bit much for just a blowgun, I'm glad it's working out for you.

Yeah I'm pretty new at this, I built my first launcher only 3 or 4 months ago. If you'd like to see the rest of the three valve launcher hit the first link in my signature. It was my second launcher.noname wrote:I remember Luckythirteen doing it on Spudtech way back in the day; I hadn't seen D_Hall's until now!

If I could find a good source for 2 inch sprinkler valves like D_Hall's I'd love to put three or four of them in parallel.

Isn't the second one VERA or something like that? I remember watching a video of it shooting a big dart through concrete walls. 100 lbs projectiles at 1000 fps I think.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:Ragnarok wrote:D_Hall's 0 Wood.

No, no, no... boomer, you already have 21/2 builds started. Remember your self imposed 3 project at a time limit.
