I know I probably missed existing info, but I looked a lot. What is the best way to keep a pen gun from firing on pulling off the chuck? Is there a way to air up a schrader valve equipped gun without mechanically depressing the stem?

Simply, remove the spring from the stem, and cut away it's pin. This way it wont be mechanical but it will be depressed by the pressure itself . It's the way i did. It will be a check valve.

Thank you. I was going to try to remove the center pin of an air chuck. This makes sense for filling, but without the pin, how will you fire it?

Get yourself a shock pump that allows you to independently depress the schrader pin:
