has anybody built a net gun or a net cannon, where you would use air pressure to shoot a net that would open up once it was in the air. i've looked around on the forums and haven't seen anything, id really appreciate it if some one could point me in the right direction id really appreciate it.

I've never seen anyone do it either, I think any gun with a wide enough Barrel would suffice, as long as the net is folded nicely. Do you want to do this to piss off your friends? Talk of hunting animals (I doubt that is your intention) is against the rules.
Welcome heres a random pic!

I've always wanted to build one of my own and never saw anything like it on spudfiles, if you're going to be the first, good luck! 8)

They made one on mythbusters, and surprisingly they did it reasonably well. It had several barrels at different angles with i think tennis balls and a net attached to them all. It was supposed to catch pidgeons if i remember, but it scared them off far before it made contact.

There is an extensive older thread about this somewhere....

I remember seeing one too... something about using tennis balls. And youtube vids... perhaps a different site...

someone, papaiya(spl?) I think posted their plans to build one for thier sister
anyways you may encounter some of the problems of the double barrel canon from the civil war,

this gun never got past experimental state, the objective was to shoot two canon balls attached by a chain creating a wide area o damage to mow down advancing ranks, but getting the cannon balls to move in sync was so tricky they often when separate ways riping the chain and flinging the balls in wild directions several people were killed during the various test, including a cow
my advice is to have the mutiple barrels with all very similar flow, symmetrical direction, all weights to have similar loose fit in barrels, and plenty of loose net

If you could get a spin on it, it would thow itself open during flight, how, I cannot say, why, I do not know.

I'm pretty sure that there have been at least three threads on here about net guns.

But later on, they decided they could put both balls(smaller) that were connected via chain into the same barrel. This was a common thing amoung pirates and the Royal Navy. They wouldn't use it for mowing down people, but to destroy the masts of ships. Of coarse this was in the mid 1600's. So, Im sure you could adapt that to fire a net, especially with modern day technology.

all you have to do is split something that fits in your barrel into 4 (or however many you wish). then atatch a corner to each part. the thing reforms into its original shape when brought together in the barrel but when it's fired it should fly apart thus opening the net that is atatched to it.
p.s. i saw this somewhere a long time ago. where i don't know.

I thinks some ones been watching the pirates of the caribean, this cannon was during the civil war
canon balls conected via chain and two part canon balls are an old thing, its just that the couldn't they usually tried this with single barrels to slice the mast of a sailing vessel (the primary objective in old naval battles) however you couldn't ensure that the it spread across horizontally in flight and separate correctly regardless it was used because the concept is much like a cluster of shots physically linked in flight yet movement was pretty random especially at high velocities. and modern technology isn't much of a factor, we all are still ametuers in the modern world we will face the same dificulties, a net may be possible but difficult, as for a linked set of high speed projectile joined by a horizontal physical bond propelled soley by a cannon (not self propelled like a rocket) and works 99% of the time to this day is rendered impossible

Actually that cannon, which is outside of city hall in athens, GA, was setup that the barrels were set at different angles, just a little bit, so the balls spread away from each other and tightened the chain. unfortunately when it was fired one barrel went a little earlier than the other and it spun knocked down some trees killed a cow some shit like that
