Well yesterday I was thinking really hard about something new. So, I then came up with a steam powered pneumatic. This is just random idea but i found the best boiler would be probably a Flash Boiler. they don't require a large water reservoir and these boilers are both lighter and quicker. Its still a bit patchy though.



Improve(or correct) my ideas. Thanks
And btw I'm new to this stuff so go easy plz.

I dont know if it was on this site or not but i have seen one. I think it was made from galvanized steel.

I really think you should do it, it would be nice to add to the collection here of powerful weapons. DYI was pondering about making one but he has other things that he is involved with (High mix hybrid and rocket car)

Also, MIT made a steam cannon and it was exceptionally powerful, is passed the SOS (the gases, (im pretty sure)) and maybe the projectile.

So if you are still interested, go on the MIT website and have a look.

check out the book backyard ballistics, i think theres plans or at least a theory for it

It's been considered before. Valves are the biggest problem.

That diagram has got my gears turning.
The gray part would be a plunger or piston. I am thinking a spring could go inside the (shown) red part,
And a check (one way)valve, added to the valve end.
And a safety pop off on the steam chamber. Then coupled with or being a blow forward bolt design.

BTW, All the gasses that are stored as liquids are basically the same concept as water to steam, except they have lower boiling points.
They do yield different pressures though. I remember a chart for determining refrigerant types by measuring the pressure compared to temperature.

@frankrede it doesn't make much sense... that can be done with a pressure booster, a stirrup pump or an air compressor. USing steam to do it does not seem as the most efficient way...

...but you can build a steam engine to power an air compressor but I don't have enough knowledge to say if it would make sense or not

Look up the mythbusters steam powered cannons on youtube. They're a talented crew, and have constructed some very well through out steam powered cannons, some with very surprising power!

I forgot to mention in my other reply that I was thinking about dry ice also, in the (shown) blue portion of the cylinder.

Yeah DYI discussed pursuing one of these back in the spring. I'm a little dubious about the practicality and safety of such a device...not when high powered pneumatics and hybrids are much easier to build.

High pressure steam isn't something you want to be fooling around with. As vividly shown here...

I've personally recreated the experiment pictured above, with very similar results . All I can say is if you are interested in the water heater exploding, have a clear area, and be 1000% more careful than you think is careful enough.

It's interesting, yes, but is it a completely controlled launching device? Hell no! Stick with anything else than a steam cannon for no other reason than the fact that they are not completly controled devices. Do it once if you have to, to satify your interest, but be rediculously safe about it, and once done try something else.
