My latest project, something inspired by batman :) . A grappling hook launcher that fits in your pocket (or utility belt:). Let's cut to the chase; here's what I've got so far.

brilliant, but do you expect the hook to hold your weight?

:D :D :D IF this works I will love you. When I was much younger (like 8 ) I made a grappling hook out of wood xD

Tables, no. This is just a prototype.... But it would be really nice if it would. Also my friend has some 200lbs test Kevlar survival line for me :D
Banjo, I did to and tried to climb a tree but unfortunately because I lacked any meaningful upper body strength I fell on my a**.

Batman's a buster. Make a lightsaber and hypercomm to go on said utility belt and you'll be heading in the right direction.

Also, since we seem to be using partial names in this thread, can I call you KY?

Thin ropes like you would use in a grappling hook are almost impossible to climb. You'll probably want a crank hoist of some type, realistically.

I'd go with steel for the hook itself, since aluminum doesn't give much of a warning before it breaks.

KY, you didn't start the thread on /diy/ about a utility belt did you?

And I've seen these thingies that slip over cord, and if you slide them up, they don't release unless you trip an anti reverse toggle. Might be worth looking at.

And for Jeebus's sake, get some upper body strength, if you can do a few pullups, you can climb ropes.

Do you simply undo the QD fitting to shoot it? If so that's quite a short "barrel" and you're not going to get much range from it, even at high pressure.

You might want to consider boosting it like pneumaticcannons did with his ballistic knife: http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/prototy ... 23451.html

No Zeus I didn't :( and I'm not as out of shape as I make myself sound (I troll from a row boat). Quite a while ago somebody here did a really nifty "coaxial burst disk" launcher that used a hallow projectile to "extend" their barrel length. Anyways I really liked it so I might borrow from that.

Jsr, Its just a quick connect fitting with a Schader on the female side and the "chamber" (projectile) on the male. So my "barrel consists of a quick connect valve.

I just got home from work (epoxied before I left) and tested it at 300psi and measured out 22ft at about 30 degrees which isnt to bad for a quick connect. I added a 5" section of 3/4" sch 40 PVC which happens to make an ok barrel and got a distance of 50ft at approx 30 degrees.

Because I originally distrusted my Al chamber I sleeved it with 1/2" Cu just to be safe but we all know safety adds weight and it didn't explode there was a 1/2" section not sleeved) so I will keep that in mind for then next iteration.

Ahhh, so It's Effectively a beast water rocket :D That is, if you decide fill it with water. While unbatmany, filling it with a denser medium than air (aka water) would increase range by quite a bit. However, stabilizers would be a must.

If I remember from my water rocketieering days the ideal ratio is somewhere around 1:3 (water to air) I did briefly try filling it with water but an annoying air bubble formed and prevented me from filling the chamber with water.

I found it to be closer to 3:5 - 1:1 w/a
an annoying air bubble formed and prevented me from filling the chamber with water.
Magic devices they are
As for the fins, if you could pull something like this off, I might be impressed :D
But srsly

Yeah, I fall a little short in te funnel department but I've got a few tricks up my sleeve.
In regards to te rpg video I think we're getting a little off topic here. Spring loaded fins are a bit much for this prototype. Il be making another projectile (all alluminium and a hell of a lot lighter) where a heavier medium and stabilizers will be a must. But after seeing how others have gone about building ballistic knives I might adapt such designs for my original purpose:pretend to be batman XD
Also now you've got me wanting to scake up my projectile into an Al water rocket  [/b]
