So should I just go with a 2" sprinkler valve? I've not been able to find a good size dust collector valve or QEV for a reasonable price.

I'm all for just buying a valve, but am having a hard time finding/identifying an appropriate one for purchase.
Look for a 8353H038 by ASCO.
It is a non-solenoid type.

I'll have to look into whether I can find a fire extinguisher. Thanks for the valve recommendation. When I have some time I will price shop and buy that one. Do you recommend the same trigger setup as shown in your link?

Water bottle and tennis ball comparability sounds great with 2.5" schedule 40 PVC. I think that excludes a coaxial build.
Re Read my post. NOT compatible with Schedule 40 thickness pipe. Use the thinwall pipe.

Thanks for the links. Would 3 inch be a little overkill for a portable launcher? The price is very tempting.

I may be confused, but I thought schedule 40 was thinner than 80. At any rate I understand - use the thin wall for tennis balls.

Look at the Flex Kleen valves, new and cheap.

What would you recommend for triggering this valve?

Thanks so much for your help. I ordered the ASCO FLEX KLEEN M28244 and 220 PSI Lock On Tire Inflator with Air Pressure Gauge Pistol Chuck Flexible Hose.

Here is a pipe chart showing some common sizes besides 80 and 40.

The ID of Schedule 40 pipe is too small for pop cans and water bottles. Besides Schedule sizes, there are metric sizes and class sizes. I'm using either a class 200 or class 160 pipe for my cannon.

Pick pipe with the ID larger than the OD of a pop can.
A current U.S. 12 oz soft drink can measures about 6.6 cm(2.6 inches) in diameter and 12.1 cm (4.75 inches) tall.

Thanks for the chart. I can't speak for water bottles or pop cans, but everything I'm finding on tennis balls indicates 2.5" schedule 40:

Sounds like you have had great results with your throw line launcher. Can I ask what the setup you have for propelling it. I'm trying to decide what size compression chamber I will need and how long the barrel should be.

Once I get this completed I'll have to talk with our search and rescue radio group to see if any of them want to put up some antennas. I have a HAM licence, but only own a handheald.

Thanks again for your help.

Here is a contribution sent to me by dart guy:

"if you would like to create an inline qev like thing, also you should make it so that the barrel is collapsible with screw together couplings so that it can be essentially 1' 1/2" long and as wide as the barrel. i am thinking of a thing like this.at the end is a co 2 bottle connector(right)(also it should have a regulator so that it doesn't blow up the chamber) then it is connected to a ball-valve and then an air chamber which powers up due to opening the ball-valve on the co2 side then you close it when you get to the right psi then open the other one so that it shoots the load. also you should make a home made round which will be discussed later. post this image in the forum and ask for improvement."

A ball valve isn't what you wanna use... It throws off accuracy and consistency...
