I plan on making a gun with a QEV. Do I have to fill it from the back/exhaust port or can I fill it from the chamber?

No. It depends on which type of Q.E.V. you actually use, but the ones you get off McMaster and a lot more that are commonly sold need to be filled from the pilot. It's because of what they're designed to do. You fill the air cylinder but injecting air through the "IN", (pilot), port, and it goes through the "CYL", (chamber), port into the air cylinder. Pressure drop on the "IN", (pilot), side causes the valve to exhaust to the "EXH", (exhaust), port, which usually isn't connected to anything, (except in applications where exhaust needs to be vented to a safe location).
