can a hybrid be made of galvinized iron? 2" dia chamber, wall thickness is around 0.15", how much pressure will that take? mcmaster didnt say.

daveboy whats your problem :?: I know the electral tape job is a little tacky but you dont have any room to talk because youve never built a hybrid (I havent either but Im working on one). You also should give him props on being first to construct a small hybrid. Please include postive with negative feedback so I doesnt seem like your talking down to people.

I was wondering, is that barrel regular Sch 80, or is that conduit, because it looks alot like the conduit at home depot.

Sorry for the late reply, I have had some computer/Internet problems for the past couple months.

OK, to answer all of your questions;

How far does it shoot?: firing Polypropylene 1" diameter spheres I could reach distances of about 200 feet , since they are very light and unstable projectiles, choosing a random path on a whim (much like golfballs, only faster). Very poor ammunition, their only advantage being a good high-velocity test-round. With a good slug of ice wadded with paper towels I could reach around 200 yards, as long as it was not too heavy (Average Ice slugs weighed about .75-1 ounces apeice).

How long does it take to build: I built mine in a matter of days, though it could have been faster had the parts been on-hand. It is very simple to make, the components are all cheap, the amount of PVC cementing is kept to a minimal amount (only two joints, each 1" in diameter), and the parts are all cheap. All-in-all, it is a very fast and easy hybrid to construct, my only recommendations being to make sure all the pipe is pressure rated and the PVC joints are cemented with copious quantities of primer and PVC cement.

SaladTosser- Yes, galvanized steel pipe is actually a much better material to built a hybrid from, opposed to PVC pressure-rated water pipe. If I remember correctly, the rating for 2" galv. steel pipe is 800 PSI which is well within the operating pressure of a standard hybrid (by standard I mean a hybrid running a 4-bar/4x mixture or below).

Daveroy- I do not happen to recall ever mentioning that my hybrid mini was the best, so I suggest that on future occasions you review topics and replies more thoroughly before posting, to avoid looking like an idiot, as in this case.

Thank you for all the positive comments, they are very appreciated.

break the sound barrier with a ping pong ball? virtually impossible and it is definatly impossible to do with PVC pipe. Ping pong balls are wayyy too light to carry far enough to break the sound barrier, to do so would require more pressure than pvc could handle, it would have to be metal. The ammo needed would have to at least be a golf ball. Something has to be heavy to break the sound barrier to fight the wind resistance of traveling over 700 mph (at sea level the speed of sound is about 760 mph). Plastic hollow balls (polycarbonate, polyethelyne, PVC, nylon)although aerodynamic, are very light, the wind resistance would make the ball slow down faster than it speeds up. dont get me wrong, im not saying its not possible, just very very unlikely and inconvenient. anyone who says they broke the sound barrier with a ping pong ball is probably talking shit. How could they scientifically prove it? Hearing the sonic boom? no dude thats just the hardcore cannon u made

edit: if the balls were solid weight polypropylene not hollow, blow molded balls it is definatly possible due to the weight difference

SpudShot-SS~ With this mini hybrid I did not break the sound barrier, but with my larger, turret mounted hybrid, I did. Looking at my avatar shows the actual picture of one of those shots recorded on my chronograph. Just to clear things up :)

(now that the topic has been kicked up by some spamming newb...)

Your claims that the sound barrier is uncrossable with a light-weight object make no sense, as the chronograph can be placed very close to the muzzle.
Now, I haven't done the math, but a ping-pong ball probably should retain velocity for the few feet to the chronograph.

nicholai, the sound barrier can be broken with pvc pipe cannons.its been done with hybrid cannons and joel has done it aswell with a pneumatic and boggieman(not sure on spelling)has a picture of his chrony at 1400fps+ and correct me if i am wrong but the sound barrier is around 1200fps,it is possible and has been done.

rna_duelers~ My hybrid cannon is the only cannon to have a recorded shot over the sound barrier. Joel's pnuematic did not break the sound barrier, he had beleived that he had, but was only a guess (its impossible to break the sound barrier with a pneumatic, atmospheric air at room temperature cannon possibly travel that fast, no matter what the pressure is). I believe the picture you are talking about from boogieman is actually mine, which is my avatar actually, that is one of the recorded shots I fired from my turret mounted hybrid.

Yes, it is possible to break the sound barrier with a pingpong ball, in fact, I personally beleive that a combustion, with the proper C:B ratio would be able to do this, but only inside the barrel. As soon as it hits the atmosphere, it would instantly slow down (that is, out of a combustion). A hybrid would definately be able to propel a ping pong ball beyond mach 1, but only for a very limited distance.

Hope this clears things up.

Do you think max 1 can be reached with heavy sheel?May be duracel battery.
