Only half a mL too, but seeing black bubbles and a nice irritating SO2 smell was a slight suprise. Now I need to spill some HNO3 on myself and pass it off as iodine stains. Already had some exposure to Cl2, as my sig suggests.

Good luck with etching, if every steel surface I saw was hot blued I'd be quite happy.

And weird glassware, tell me moar...

Jake shared this interesting link.

It's in Finnish but the pictures are quite self explanatory, I really like the idea of blackening the brass with sulfuric then polishing the raised areas... I think we might have a winner :) will take some *cough* samples home this afternoon and have play...

Some etching experiments, using concentrated nitric acid on one piece and the hydrochloric/peroxide mix recommended in jake's link. In both cases I used nail polish (from my own personal collection, naturally Image) to mask the design.

Unsurprisingly the nitric went much quicker and bit deeper. I don't have the chemicals required to black it but used some ink and gave them a light polish, really happy with the effect :)

Here we go, a simple brass ring with some acid etching, much more comfortable to shoot now. I also redid the knife tail with a lighter aluminium support.

I'd like to black or otherwise colour the collar to bring out the lettering, need to consider options. Also needs a discreet stop for the collar to stop it falling off everytime I shoot it

Cheers :)

Some more work, added a front stop for the collar, and ordered a bottle of this stuff to blacken the collar and highlight the etching.

Agreed :)

Had some fun with etching in the meantime, damn this focus on aesthetics and my artistic streak forcing its way out of the cellar I had confined it to! I have engineering to do aaaughhh!!!!

another test this time using masking tape instead of nail polish, leaving more crisp lines as the latter tends to be eaten away by the acid.

Scrap pieces of brass, just playing with techniques at the moment.
