Pressure washers use a lower volume of water, don't they? So they take less force to propel water at lethal velocity. Although I've heard stories of people who have hit their hand, and the skin got punctured, and their hand literally ballooned with water!

dude if you sink this thing under water you arent even going to hear it..it will go fwoomp and a bunch of huge bubbles will come up...

beleive me ive done things like this before.. i got a 4 inch peice of pipe and two endcaps.. i glues it together tapped a 1/4 hole through the endcap. i hooked a hose up to the quarter inch hole and put my remote coil on the other end.. i tied like 5 huge ass rocks to it and threw it in my fishing hole (6-8 ft deep). i let the c02 rip full pressure and it took about 3 seconds to explode...all that happenned wass a fwoooomp and a shit load of bubble...the plastic came up in like 50 million pieces and floated down stream..

you wont get an accurate result. you have to compensate for the water pressure on the pipe. did any one see the mythbusters episode where they droped a grenade in a bucket of water to see if it supressed the result? it worked very well the water slowed the grenade frags considerably

at 6 feet there is about 17 psi or pressure on the pipe

I think that if it was under 6 feet of water it should burst at 17 psi higher than it would if it wasn't in water. Taking the burst pressure and subtracting 17 shouldn't be too difficult, and the water adds a lot of safety. Suspending it over the lake would kind of defeat the purpose of sinking it in the first place, wouldn't it?
On a side note, the concept of the water jet cutter illustrates how almost anything that is moving quickly enough can do significant damage. (and have you ever seen a light gas gun firing miniscule chunks of plastic at inch thick aluminum plate?)

Actually, you could make a wood box, but replace one side with bullet-proof glass. ....Or, just a couple sheets of clear plastic you can find at home depot. Of course, this is a lot less safe, but you would get an accurate test, and a BIIIG explosion!

....Orrrrr you could take your gun to a clear field, attach the compressor to a reaaally long extension cord, and sit behind a clear plastic sheet, with the camera. Then, just plug in your extension cord, film, and wait.

...Or a cross between the box and empty field methods
