3" big is more like 1.8 kg....
but anyway
I don't think it makes sense to fire a 1.4 kg steel ball at almost point blank range :D
casting it from lead would be much better idea for your gun DYI - lead is denser than steel and it would deform more on impact... Do think about reducing chance of any ricochet

Your brain being splashed by a ricochet would make your clip very popular on youtube :violent2:

Which would apply only if it were really 3" in diameter. It's 2 3/4" (7 cm) IIRC ,which works out pretty much bang on 1.4 kilos.

yes sorry. They didn't write here about its diam.
Anyway this --> http://www.gewa.com.pl/page.php?d=kulki1wymiary seems quite accurate for steel.

Any idea how to get the weight of lead balls of given diameter with the use of this table ?

Does (lead density/steel density) * mass of steel ball in the table = mass of lead ball of the same diameter?

Lead ball mass = radius (in cm) x radius x radius x pi x 1.333 x density of lead in gm/cm^3 (~11)

It's 11.34 g/cm3* IIRC, and also, that would be better done as 4/3 rather than 1.333.

* I know a lot of densities off the top of my head.

Correct, though you make it sound like I complain I have nothing to fire it with every week on a regular basis :? :D

DYI, I'll hang on to it for now, the cannon to launch it is still in the works - maybe eventually at a 45 degree angle it will make it across the Atlantic :D

I got a few large Steel bearings, one is stainless and the other is plain steel I'll see how big they are and get a picture up and the race is on jack to see who can get one across there continent first!I think I'm at a bit of a disadvantage though...

The Stainless steel ball is 1.2kg,the larger non stainless ball is just shy of 2.2kg and I got them from my uncle who owns a machining, milling, engineering company Leussink Engineering and he gave these to me when he showed me the company one time when I was younger.Thats the end of that chapter.

Here is there website if you wunna have a read up http://www.leussink.com.au/

Awwwww :D

Seriously, what size chamber would one need for a 3" ball?
Even better, the size of the "piston" would be remarkable!

@JSR: I could see a "balls of steel" joke coming there. I wasn't quite right, but I was damn close.

The humour remains adolescent and is becoming predictable, I need to start moderating myself. At least, props to rna_duelers for not rotating that liquor bottle by 90 degrees to complete the phallic allusion :D
