I found a great site based on semi-auto designs and some types of valves. I take no credit for anything on this site because I did not come up with any of it.

Hey for the paint grenade breech you can still use it for spuds, just take a couple inches off of your barrel, dremmel it to a point, then cut a potato, take it out and push it into the hole you cut. wouldn't that work?

You could also make potato shells. Take a small chunk of 1.5" PVC, sharpen one end, and cut a potato into it. Make the 1.5" barrel, put the shell in the sleeve and you have a perfectly sealed, breech loaded, potato. That's what they do for most semi-autos on the site.
