I have an idea, and D_Hall, if you're still around you may be able to make this. Is it possible for someone to code a program that compares a cannon to a real solid propellant gun? I know discussion solids are not allowed, which is why I was asking about the program. If you don't like the thread, you can lock it, but I am just asking.
One example of why this would be cool, Mr. Crowleys hybrid. I would love to find out the power of it compared to say a Barret .50 caliber sniper rifle. Would it have the same AP results or would it be better? Just a thought, plus it would make it easier for the canadians to figure out if they need to turn their pressures down so they don't need the license *cough cough* Demon knows what I mean *cough cough*

MrCrowley has already compared the power of his hybrid. Watch this video. Look carefully at the chart starting at 0:45. By using GGDT or HGDT to calculate the energy in joules, you can compare it to any weapon ever made.

You don't need a program for it, you can take the muzzle velocity and mass of the projectile and find the energy then compare it to a firearm.

True, but I am talking against different types of targets. Plus it would help us figure out how big our back stop will have to be. This was mostly just an idea that popped into my head and I figured it may be worth looking into...

The most muzzle energy I could probably get out of the cannon is probably 10,000J and the highest velocity (with a very light projectile) in the neighbourhood of 650-750ms depending on how accurate HGDT is, both figures short of .50cal rifles.
If I put a bullet round in a sabot, I'd still get pretty good penetration I imagine, it would just be less than that of a .50 cal round fired from one of those big rifles.

You should try a bullet in a sabot. It might work, but you would have to get it to fly completely straight.

Best option would be to fire point blank. With a bullet, I don't think I would want to risk firing from a distance anyway.warhead052 wrote:You should try a bullet in a sabot. It might work, but you would have to get it to fly completely straight.
My small hybrid could put a .303 round through 4" of pine and my garage door before burrowing itself in a tree stump. I'd like to see what the piston hybrid could do, just need a good sabot.

I have an idea, remove it if you want, but figure out how to fire a live round while its flying in the air. Imagine the amount of fun that would be! One really loud boom, then a crack from the bullet hitting SOS.

I suggest doing a bit of research on sonic booms.

Yes of course... The one thing I am too lazy to do, research.
It would still be fun to hear the boom of the hybrid, then a plink of a regular bullet in comparison to the hybrid.

probably wont do much because there's no barrel for it to accelerate while its in the air.warhead052 wrote:I have an idea, remove it if you want, but figure out how to fire a live round while its flying in the air. Crna is right. I call a velocity increase of maybe 10 fps at best. It will also cause the round to tumble in flight. Not to mention, the casing isn't designed for use outside of the chamber so the casing will become essentially a shotgun-style round. Would be interesting somehow.
