Suppressor packing

I need some ideas for the packing in a suppressor. I made the basic type, just a tube with 2 holes drilled in it for the ammo to go through, with a larger tube on the outside sealed at both ends. Works pretty well the way it is now, but I would like to make it a bit quieter. Any ideas on what would work?

Removal of sound energy is the requirement. If it is for a traditional firearm, you need to look elsewhere for advise. For an air cannon, the damping material they use in Acoustic Suspension speakers should work fine with a large volume suppressor. I'm not sure what would be compatible with a combustion cannon that would work well other than some sort of baffle plates inside to cool the combustion gases that enter and add friction to the flow within the suppressor. Traditional firearms are too high energy to use these home made solutions. They would be damaged in use.

Might have a look at the parts diagrams for shrouded rifles...the Benjamin Marauder, Air Arms S400, FX Monsoon and Air Force Talon SS come to mind.

Have fired the AA...even set at ~30ftlbs it's bloody quiet....a LOT quieter than any of my pcps. 8)

Packing can be fairly dense for a pneumatic, you're only reducing the bang to a whoosh.

Hybrids and firearms have to cool the gases as well, so 00 steel wool with white lithium grease is a good choice. Make sure the internal volume of the silencer is fairly close to the volume of the gas inside the chamber at STP for better performance.

Most importantly, make sure the baffles are tight, consider using a fairly weak material and shoot through it for a good fit.

You don't know silence until you've tried a Daystate PCP, because there's no mechanical noise either, solenoid hammer Set to 12-16 ft/lbs when you fire my Mk.3, if there wasn't a hole in the target you would think it didn't fire!

Back to warhead's question, packing is not so important for a pneumatic. What you want is volume and baffles.

Look at the Daystate airstream design, one of the quietest on the airgun market:

Note how the packing is synthetic material like a scouring pad, and only placed on the outer edge of the tube.

The Soundbiter is another simple but effective design, with washers as baffles and springs as spacers, which is only good for airguns and cannot be used for firearms, not ever! Remember silencers are probably illegal where you liveand you should not be making them:

Yeah, I agree with Tech. Lets veer off of the firearms. I'm not worried about those, to me the louder the better with them.

As to what you posted jack, are you saying I should make my suppressor as big as possible and add as many baffles as possible? Or something along those lines?
