Hi all,

Can the Cops trace a website to your house?

Thanks, I'd really like to know cause I'm thinking of starting an Australia Spudgun Shop etc.

THanks,

Most local law enforcement do not have the technology, but the feds (FBI, ATF, etc) do.

Just don't do anything illegal and they won't mess with you

The cops can trace you, but they are not likely to trace you if you download a few songs. Its more for like terrorism and child porn and stuff like that.

But saying that, if you use bit-torrent and download a game, the developers can trace you. My mate (this is Australia) got caught for downloading a game of bit-torrent, he just got an email from his ISP, the game company contacted his ISP, they basically said if you do it again we will take legal action.

Your personal info is required to be registered with ARIN and possibly ICANN
They run the internet.

The same thing that happened to marco's friend happened to me except i downloaded windows xp, but luckily i burned the disc and deleted the file before i got into any real trouble.

Goes to show you, if the government or a business has a problem with what you do on the internet, they can contact your isp and your isp will ALWAYS side with the rulling force just to not get sued. Thats how it is in America and seeing how some of the world is getting americanized i'd be careful.

They are not likely to track your uploads of html files though because that honestly be a waste of their time. packet sniffing is really only done by your isp at the special request of law enforcement.

So be careful but i dont think it would be an issue to start the site.

Meh, i'm sure they wouldn't pursue you for a spudgunning site, that is of course unless someone complains about it.

...and I've been starting to question whether these legal threats can actually be followed through with. Look at www.thepiratebay.org for example.

I wouldn't take the chance, though.

or, you can just have your computer continuously change its IP address... My friend's uncle's computer changes its IP 5 times a minute. There is no way to track that...

Well usually you can't do that because your isp assigns a ip for you which under most contracts gives the isp the power to change it or not change it whenever you want. Generally with a dynamic ip contract in most cases just unplugging your cable modem will changed your ip, but not in all cases.

Haha really? Why's that? Because NZ only cares about biological threats probably.

I don't use torrents anyway, go projectw.org and warez-bb.org :P

@Redcoat

The police will eventually find and terminate your site, spudguns are illegal in Aussie, and selling them is worse.

What I suggest you do is sell kits or something similar and suggest that you can use the kits for home irrigation or making a spud gun, but don't use the term spudgun.

In other words just work around the law, don't hide from it.

You might be able to sell individual valves, call them PVC Quick Exhaust Valves, and claim they are used for pneumatic rams.

Do you have a machining shop? I'm asking because wouldn't people want to buy a valve that has been machined with precision? I'm not saying you don't make good valves, all I'm saying is if people pay money for a valve than would cost to make it, they would want it better than what they can make.

Personally in Aus, i wouldn't want to sell a valve or spud gun or chamber or anything like that, because you could be held responsible if someone gets hurt. Even if you have a disclaimer, the police would no doubt confront the individual who hurt themselves or someone else and they will say they brought it of this website, then the cops will launch the book at you with a spudgun....

Thanks for the suggestions. I may think about Mr Crowley's Idea, or I will maybe just advertise in my signature and occasionally post on the classifieds (Different parts.) THough most people on this site don't buy stuff they make it.

I might also leave an "Email Me if you are interested" on the site as well.

Thank you all very much.

Actually they are in Sweden because of loose copyright laws.

If you are hosting the site on your home computer than it could easily be traced back to you.
If you make an actual domain then you need to provide your personally info to register the domain and that info can be accessed by a simple whois request by anybody.
There are some registers that allow anonymous registration where they register the domain for you, but they will still have your info and will probably turn it over to authorities if they request it.

However, if you're not going around and shooting people with your gun then they probably don't have any reason to want to track you down. You have to remember that if it is not somebody's job to do something then they probably won't do it. Do you think anybody really has the job of going online and tracking down Aussie kids who make spud guns?
