I had made a burst disk launcher that had a loop of nichrome wire resting against a mylar disk that was actuated when current was passed through the loop, it worked but was too complicated to set up.

Knowing JSR and his love of all things efficient he probably used a treadmill or similar to generate the current needed.
Jon, can we have some more details as to what you are designing, like why did you want to know about burst discs?

I had used an old Ericsson cellphone charger, I think it was 9 volt DC. I have some pictures of the setup on my home PC, I'll post them later.jon_89 wrote:how big where your batteries or did you use ac current?

I tried that but the hamster died before the disk burst

I think it's easier to make a pneumatically triggered burst disk, no fiddly electronics and insulation worries.

Even easier than that would be puncturing the burst disk manually, such as in the recent Compact Grenade Launcher by Davidvaini.
JSR, did that nichrome wire melt once the current was passed through it?
And, sorry about your hamster.

No, that's the reason for using nichrome wire. You can find it in the heating elements of electrical heaters etc., it's not hard to obtain.hubb017 wrote:JSR, did that nichrome wire melt once the current was passed through it?
