jimmy101: Thanks for the information. This workbench will be located indoors at all time, so I do not think that temperature should effect the wood too much. However, I probably will end up going with the L-Brackets, just because I do not have the tools/time/precision to work with the threaded inserts (although they are a very good idea). I also like the previous idea of just using countersunk screws in the top of the wood. I don't mind having a few holes in the board as long as it doesn't chip away. And from what I have read, using a countersinking drill bit will eliminate most of these chips (if there are any), though I am not 100% sure.

Sugar maple is used for pool cues so you can imagin wat kinda woad it is. It is elastic so i doubt it will splinter.
