You won't need a 5 mm gap to get the job done in a 10x hybrid. You should think along the lines of a spark plug gap.

Maybe I don't need it, but it would draw less current. But yeah, 5mm is a bit overkill.

To save power, but still have a long powerful spark, simply reconfigure the 555 timer as a monostable multivibrator and trigger it for single shots. Have the on time in the same range as before and you are good to go.
